No, swimming in Lake Ritsa is officially prohibited, and even if you really want to, the water is icy. The water temperature rarely rises above +17 °C even in the height of summer, and averages around +10 °C. The lake is located at an altitude of 950 meters, and the mountain rivers that feed it do not have time to warm up. In addition, the lake is located on the territory of the Ritsa National Park, where a protected regime is in effect, and swimming is officially prohibited.

So don't plan a trip to Ritsa with the purpose of swimming — it's not a beach vacation. However, you can have a great time here: ride a catamaran (from 500 rubles per person for half an hour), stroll along the promenade, take photos against the backdrop of turquoise water and mountains, and also visit Stalin's dacha on the opposite shore. If you want to swim, it's better to stay on the coast — in Gagra or Pitsunda.

The water in the lake is not only cold, but also changes color throughout the year: in spring and summer it is emerald yellow, and in autumn and winter it becomes a cold blue-cyan hue. This is due to the transparency of the inflowing rivers and microscopic algae.

The best time to visit Ritsa is from May to October. In July-August it is crowded, and the water may be murky, but the weather is stable. In spring and autumn there are fewer tourists, but rain is possible. In winter, the road is sometimes closed due to snowfall, although the lake itself almost never freezes. In any case, bring a warm jacket and comfortable shoes — it is always cooler in the mountains than on the coast.

If you are going on your own, keep in mind that entry to the national park is paid: 700 rubles per adult, children from 8 to 12 years old — 200 rubles, under 8 years old — free. You will have to leave your car at a paid parking lot 600 meters from the lake (200 rubles for the whole day). Public transport does not go here, so either your own car, a taxi (from 6000 rubles per trip with waiting), or a group excursion from 1300 rubles.
