Yes, definitely worth it! Lake Ritsa is the hallmark and main natural attraction of Abkhazia, which you must see with your own eyes. Even despite the crowds of tourists in high season and sometimes outdated infrastructure, the turquoise water surrounded by majestic mountains and fresh mountain air leave unforgettable impressions. This is the place for which it is worth going to Abkhazia.

Here's what awaits you at the lake and what you need to know before your trip:

What to see and do

The lake itself is large (2500 by 600 meters), with a promenade around it with cafes, souvenir shops and a pier. Main activities:

  • Ride a catamaran or boat. The price is steep — from 500 rubles per person for 30 minutes, but if you go to the end of the promenade, you can bargain and find cheaper.
  • Visit nearby waterfalls. Nearby are Ptichiy Klyuv waterfall and Molochniy waterfall.
  • Check out Stalin's dacha. It is located on the opposite shore, you can drive or walk there (more details — follow the link).
  • Climb to Malaya Ritsa. This is a lesser-known but no less picturesque lake 2.5 km higher along the trail. There are almost no tourists there.
  • Just walk and breathe. The views here are stunning, especially from the upper observation decks.

Practical tips

  • When to go. The best time is from May to October. In July-August it is very crowded and the water in the lake may be murky. In spring and autumn there are fewer tourists, but rain is possible. In winter, the road may be closed due to snow.
  • What to bring. It is always cooler in the mountains than on the coast. Be sure to take a warm jacket or windbreaker, comfortable waterproof shoes and cash — cards are not accepted everywhere.
  • How much time is needed. Just for exploring the lake — 1.5–2 hours. Considering the road from Gagra (1.5–2 hours one way) and stops at other attractions along the way, allow a full day.
  • Where to eat. There are cafes and barbecue places on the promenade. Prices: hot dish 500–700 rubles, barbecue 400–600 rubles per serving. You can take a snack with you.
  • Can you swim? The water is very cold (even in summer about +10°C), and swimming is officially prohibited as the lake is in a protected area.

Important: Entrance to the Ritsa National Park is paid — 700 rubles for adults, 200 rubles for children 8-12 years old, children under 8 years old free.

How to get there

The lake is 60 km from Gagra. You can get there:

  • By car. The road is good, asphalt, but with serpentines. Parking is paid — 200 rubles for the whole day (located 600 meters from the lake, see on the map).
  • With an excursion. This is the most popular option. Group excursions cost from 1300 rubles + entrance ticket. The downside is many commercial stops. We recommend looking for individual or small group jeep tours to see more.
  • By taxi. The price of a trip from Gagra with waiting and back is from 6000 to 10,000 rubles.
  • By bus. Public transport does not go here.
