Which taxi apps work in Kuala Lumpur?

Three main taxi-hailing apps operate in Kuala Lumpur: Grab, Maxim and MyCar. Uber no longer functions in Malaysia. Here is a brief description of each service so you can choose the right one:

• Grab: The most popular and reliable service. Works like Uber: fixed price, route tracking, cash or card payment. We recommend it first.
• Maxim: Often offers lower prices than Grab. However, cars take longer to arrive (sometimes 20-30 minutes), and drivers may cancel orders. Suitable if you are not in a hurry and want to save money.
• MyCar: A local Malaysian app. In our observation, its prices are higher than Grab, and it offers no particular advantages for tourists.

For most situations — a trip from the airport, to the hotel, to attractions — Grab is best. Install it in advance, register (you can use a foreign number) and use it. The apps require internet, so we recommend buying a local SIM card at the airport.
