Tao Island in Thailand: Is it worth going for diving?

Yes, Tao Island (Ko Tao) is one of the best locations in Thailand and all of Southeast Asia for diving, especially for training. It is a true mecca for divers, known for its crystal clear water, rich underwater world, and a large number of dive centers offering courses at affordable prices.
Here is why Ko Tao is so popular among diving enthusiasts:
- Ideal place for training: It has the largest number of PADI certifications in the world. Open Water Diver courses are often cheaper than anywhere else, while the quality of training is high.
- Rich underwater world: There are many dive sites around the island: coral gardens, underwater rocks (e.g., Chumphon Pinnacle), and shipwrecks. Here you can see whale sharks (in season), barracudas, turtles, and a huge variety of tropical fish.
- Excellent conditions: Underwater visibility often reaches 20-30 meters. There are places for both beginners (gentle reefs) and experienced divers (deep dives).
- Developed infrastructure: The island has dozens of dive schools, equipment rental points, and comfortable safari boats. All life here is somehow connected with diving.
Important: The best time for diving on Ko Tao is from March to September, when the sea is calmest. From October to December, storms and restrictions for dives are possible. Also note that the island is small and does not offer the variety of nightlife as Phuket or Pattaya. The main focus here is precisely the underwater world and beach relaxation.
If your main goal is to get a diver certification or to make many interesting dives, then Ko Tao is an excellent choice. If diving is just one of the entertainments for you, and you also want excursions, shopping, and active nightlife, perhaps it is better to consider Phuket or Krabi.
