It is worth staying in Kuah town on Langkawi only in two cases: if you need one or two nights before an early ferry/after a late arrival or if you are on a business trip. For classic beach holidays, Kuah is not suitable.

Kuah is the administrative capital of the island, a major port city, but not a resort. Here are its main characteristics:

  • No beaches for swimming. The coastline in the city is mainly port and embankment. You cannot swim here.
  • The cheapest accommodation on the island. Hotel prices in Kuah are significantly lower than in Cenang. This is the main advantage for transit travelers.
  • Developed urban infrastructure. There are large shopping centers (Langkawi Parade, Teow Soon Huat), many duty-free shops, banks. This is convenient for shopping, but not for seaside relaxation.
  • Convenient transport logistics. The city is located near the Kuah Jetty ferry terminal. If you have an early ferry to Koh Lipe, Satun, or the mainland, staying overnight in Kuah is reasonable.
Kuah is a business center, not a beach resort

Our conclusion: If you come to Langkawi for the sea, sun, and beaches, your choice is Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, or the northern beaches (Tanjung Rhu). Leave Kuah for a transit overnight stay or a day trip for shopping and to see the main symbol of the islandβ€”the eagle statue at Eagle Square.
