The legend of the Pregnant Maiden Lake (Dayang Bunting) on Langkawi is a beautiful and sad story of love and miracle. Their forbidden love led to the birth of a child, but the infant, unfortunately, died just seven days after birth.

Mourning her loss, the princess blessed the waters of the lake and asked the higher powers to grant fertility to any woman who bathes here or drinks its waters. Since then, the lake has become freshwater (although located near the ocean) and, as locals believe, possesses magical power to help women become pregnant, even if they were considered infertile.

There is also a simpler version of the legend, according to which the child was born from the union of mystical elf-like creatures and was buried by its mother in this lake, after which it acquired magical properties.

During the tour, guides will definitely show you the hills on the island, which from a certain angle resemble the silhouette of a pregnant woman lying on her back—this is considered another confirmation of the legend.

The scientific explanation for the origin of the lake is much more prosaic: it is believed that there was a karst mountain with caves in its place, which collapsed millions of years ago, forming a basin filled with rainwater.
