In Sapa, there are several proven and popular routes offered by tour companies and guides. The main ones are:

  • Classic route to Muong Hoa Valley — the most popular. Includes visits to Lao Chai, Ta Van, and Ban Ho villages, rice fields, waterfalls, and hot springs. Available for 1, 2, or 3 days with overnight stays in guesthouses. Entrance to the valley is paid — 150,000 dong.
  • Cat Cat Village — an ideal option for a half-day easy walk. This is the nearest tourist village of the Hmong people to Sapa. Entrance is also 150,000 dong.
  • Ta Phin Village — a less promoted one-day route through rice terraces to a village where Hmong and Dao people live. There is also a cave there.
  • Fansipan Mountain — ascent to the highest peak in Indochina (3,143 m). Requires good preparation, a guide, and equipment for overnight stays. There is an option to take the cable car.
The classic route passes through the picturesque Muong Hoa Valley

We recommend choosing routes that start through Cat Cat Village, rather than going first on asphalt to the checkpoint. This is more interesting and scenic.

Each route is unique. The classic one is for full immersion in nature and culture, Cat Cat is for a quick introduction, Ta Phin is as an alternative, and Fansipan is for a real adventure.

We have told in detail about each route, what exactly you will see and how to combine them, in our big article: Trekking in Sapa: complete guide-instruction.
