Fines for traffic violations in the Philippines are quite serious. Police issue them on the spot during stops, as there are practically no traffic cameras on the roads. Here are the amounts of the most common fines:

  • Driving without a license or without the required category: 3000 pesos (about $60).
  • Riding without a helmet (for driver or passenger): 1500 pesos (about $30) for the first offense, 3000 for the second, 5000 for the third.
  • Not wearing a seatbelt: 1000 pesos (about $20).
  • Using a phone while driving: 5000 pesos (about $100) for the first time, then the amount increases.
  • Driving under the influence: 5000 pesos.

Be especially careful with document checks. Police are increasingly setting up temporary checkpoints on popular tourist routes, checking everyone indiscriminately. If you don't have a license with category 'A' for a motorbike, a fine is unavoidable. Additionally, you may be suspended from driving, and the vehicle may be sent to an impound lot, leading to additional expenses.

We advise always carrying your license, wearing a helmet (this is mandatory for everyone), and being extremely attentive on the road. For more information on rules and personal driving experience, see our article: Renting Transport in the Philippines.
