The amount depends on your travel style, but here are the main guidelines and currency tips to help calculate your budget:

What currency to take: Bring US dollars or euros. This is the most profitable and hassle-free currency for exchange throughout Malaysia. Expect to get approximately 4.0 - 4.07 ringgit per 1 dollar (real rate at exchange offices). You won't be able to exchange rubles.

Exchange tip: Don't exchange much at the airport β€” it's not profitable there. Exchange a minimum for transport, and change the main amount in Kuala Lumpur (at Mid Valley Megamall shopping center) or at exchange points in cities.

Additional financial tools:

  1. UnionPay bank card (RSHB/ATB): Excellent for payments in shopping malls, restaurants, hotels. Withdrawing cash from it is expensive due to ATM fees (10-20 ringgit).
  2. Cash ringgit: Essential for markets, small shops, paying for local transport, and in remote areas.

Our recommendation: Take cash dollars/euros with you to exchange for ringgit as needed. Have a UnionPay card as a backup for large non-cash purchases. This way you minimize risks and losses on fees.
