Entry to the fish markets in Negombo is completely free. No fee is charged for visiting, you can freely walk around the area, take photos, and observe the trading process.
However, it is worth considering some possible additional expenses:
- Transport to the markets (200-400 rupees for a tuk-tuk one way)
- Purchase of fish or seafood, if desired
- Possible "tips" for pushy guides (but this is completely optional)
If you decide to buy fish, bargain - especially with private sellers who trade on the streets near the markets directly from the ground. Most often these are women, and you can and should negotiate the price with them.
Important point: the markets do not offer a service for cooking purchased fish, unlike some other famous fish markets in Asia. If you want to cook the purchased fish, you will have to do it yourself. You can try to buy a grill and charcoal at the Coronation supermarket a few hundred meters from the market, but it's better to check their availability first.
