Answer (changed )

You can get to the fish markets in Negombo on foot or by tuk-tuk, depending on which part of the city you are staying in. The new market is located on Esplanade Road north of the Fort, and the old market is on Mankuliya Road, 1.5 km south of the new one.

If you are staying in the tourist area, you can walk to the new market in 20-40 minutes depending on your location. Walking will allow you to better feel the atmosphere of the city.

To the old market, you will have to take a tuk-tuk in any case. There are usually no problems finding a tuk-tuk even early in the morning, but if you want to get to the market at dawn (around 5 a.m.), it is better to arrange the trip in advance.

Approximate tuk-tuk prices:

  • To the new market: 200-300 rupees
  • To the old market: 300-400 rupees

To order a tuk-tuk, you can use mobile apps Uber or PickMe, which operate in Negombo. This will help avoid inflated prices and communication problems.

If you plan to visit both markets, the optimal route is: first by tuk-tuk to the old market early in the morning, then on foot or by tuk-tuk to the new market, and from there walk back to the tourist area.
