The cleanest beach in Negombo is along Porutota Road, approximately three kilometers from the city center. It is here that we found relatively clean areas with minimal litter.

Based on our personal experience exploring all of Negombo's beaches:

  • Porutota Road — the cleanest area, where hotels maintain the territory
  • Lewis Place — already dirtier, although closer to the center
  • Negombo lagoon area — there are beaches with black sand, but cleanliness is uneven
  • Outside tourist zones — wild, littered areas where local residents dump waste

The main problem with Negombo's beaches is the murky water due to rivers flowing into the ocean, which bring silt. The water here is almost never crystal clear, so it is not the best place for diving and snorkeling.
