You can reach Marawila by train on the railway branch from Colombo to Puttalam. This is a dead-end line, so you can only get to Marawila from Colombo, Negombo, Puttalam, and Chilaw.

Trains on the Colombo-Marawila route are only suburban, similar to our commuter trains, but diesel-powered. The carriages are only seated 3rd class. Tickets are purchased immediately before departure, not sold in advance.

Key information for the trip:

  • Trains from Colombo run at least 8 times a day
  • Travel time β€” about 4 hours
  • Ticket cost β€” from 160 rupees
  • Tickets need to be purchased to Nattandiya station (say "Marawila" at the ticket counters)

From Nattandiya station to Marawila itself is another 7 kilometers. You can get there by tuk-tuk for 300 rupees. It's difficult to find a car taxi here.

Train schedules can be checked on the official Sri Lanka Railways website: https://eservices.railway.gov.lk/

If you're traveling from other cities in Sri Lanka, it's best to transfer in Colombo, as it's a hub station with good connections to all regions of the country.
