For tourists, the above-ground metro BTS Skytrain is significantly more convenient and useful than the underground MRT. BTS passes through the main tourist and business districts of the city, including Siam, Sukhumvit, and Silom, and connects many attractions.
Advantages of BTS Skytrain:
- Excellent city views during the ride
- Passes through main tourist zones
- Convenient transfers to other types of transport
- Frequent train service (every 2-8 minutes)
The underground metro MRT mainly passes through residential areas and is primarily of interest to locals. However, it can be useful for tourists for:
- Traveling to Hua Lamphong railway station
- Visiting the northern bus terminal Mo Chit
- Accessing Chatuchak Market
The fare cost in both types of metro is comparable: 16-44 baht in BTS and 16-42 baht in MRT. Tickets are not yet integrated, so when transferring, you need to buy a new ticket.
