How much time is needed for a layover in Shanghai?

The necessary time for a layover greatly depends on the type of your ticket.
- If you are flying on one ticket with one airline without changing airports, even with a terminal change, 1 hour is sufficient. The airline is responsible for your connection and in case of flight delay will rebook you on the next one.
- If you have tickets from different airlines or a transfer from an international to a domestic flight, allow at least 4-5 hours. You will have to exit the transit zone, apply for visa-free transit, go through passport control (where there can be queues), retrieve and re-check your luggage. Any delay in this case is your risk.
