Return tickets or tickets to any other country must be available. They are rarely checked at the arrival airport in Vietnam, but they may be checked at the check-in counter at the departure airport. And if you don't have them, you could very well be denied check-in and boarding. Of course, you can read reviews in chats and forums saying 'tickets are not needed because no one asked us.' But officially, this requirement exists and is checked, and whether to risk being denied boarding on the flight or not is up to you.

If you are absolutely determined to fly only one way, you can bypass this requirement:

  • Buy a ticket reservation on special websites (search for 'ticket reservation for visa')
  • Buy a refundable ticket to one of the neighboring countries, and return it after entry.
  • Buy the cheapest non-refundable ticket to a neighboring country, and after entry simply 'throw it away.'

Finally, if you want to leave Vietnam by land through China, Cambodia, Laos, and the like, and then fly out from another country, to avoid problems, it is again advisable to have a ticket for departure from another country and visas if required. But in this case, you will have to explain your route at check-in. Although, of course, this does not guarantee that no problems will arise.
