Yes, there is a difference between bills of different years of issue. New-style bills are all those issued after 2013; they differ from old ones by a darker color and a vertical security strip. Old-style bills are issues from 1996 to 2013 inclusive; they have no security strip. It is these bills from 1996 to 2013 without a security strip that are currently sold in most cases in Russian banks.

There are no major problems with exchanging old-style bills, as long as they are in excellent condition: no folds, inscriptions, stamps, or signs of use. If there are defects, they may not be accepted anywhere at all, so watch their condition and do not take such bills from Russian banks.

As for the discount on old bills, they are taken at about 0.1 – 0.5 baht lower (about 0.3-1.4%) than new ones, depending on the exchange point. This, of course, refers to $100 and $50 bills, since the exchange rate for smaller denominations is much lower anyway. But sometimes there is no difference between old and new bills, which should be a reason to be cautious and check the rate at other exchange offices, as it may mean that the rate at such an exchange office is initially lowered and they accept any bills at a significantly lower rate.
