Answer

To rent a motorbike in Bali, you don't need a license, they don't ask for it. But to drive on the roads in Bali and Indonesia in general, you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) with category 'A'. Categories 'B' or 'M' are not suitable!!!

IDPs are issued as a booklet and are given in addition to your existing license without exams or medical certificates. They are issued at the traffic police or MFC, and it's easiest to apply through the Gosuslugi website. The fee for issuance is 1600 rubles (may change, check the Gosuslugi website), and the permit is valid for three years.

You can rent a motorbike without a license, but you must have one on the road. And they really do check – we've experienced this more than once. They especially like to stop rule breakers and especially those riding without a helmet. Of course, you can read reviews that someone has lived in Bali for a long time and never been checked, and if they were, it was resolved on the spot with a bribe of $10-30. Officially, the fine is about $65 and immediate suspension from driving with the vehicle towed to the impound lot. But that's up to you.
