Should you rent a car in Thailand or is it easier to use buses?

In short — yes, absolutely. A car in Thailand gives you the kind of freedom that tourists on group tours are completely deprived of: stopping at a beautiful view, turning onto an unfamiliar road, lingering at a market with the most delicious pad thai. Calculated per day, our car expenses came to just 875 baht per day — about the same as tickets for intercity buses and trains, but without being tied to a schedule.

Moreover, renting often turns out to be more cost-effective than a combination of transfers, taxis, and excursions. We booked the car for all 18 days at once, including days with almost no trips — and it turned out to be more economical than returning it and renting again. Plus — no suitcases at bus stations and no "missed the last bus."

Who car rental in Thailand is especially suitable for:

  • Those who want to see non-touristy places — like us, making it to Sangkhla Buri near the border with Myanmar, where there are almost no Europeans.
  • Families and couples with luggage — no need to haul things on public transport.
  • Those planning long journeys — from Pattaya to Kanchanaburi or Ayutthaya is more comfortable and faster by car.
