Can you tell me where to eat cheaply on Koh Larn? We're planning a day trip from Pattaya, but we don't want to overpay at tourist cafes on the beach.

Eating cheaply on Koh Larn is quite possible, the main thing is to know a couple of local tricks. Yes, prices on the island are about 10–30% higher than in Pattaya, but if you don't grab the first cafes right on the beach, lunch will be quite budget-friendly.

The cheapest cafes are in the fishing village of Na Baan – this is the main "urban" center of the island next to the pier of the same name. Along the street that stretches from the pier south parallel to the shore, many ordinary Thai eateries operate. There, a simple rice or noodle dish can be eaten for just 100 baht. For comparison: in tourist cafes on Tawaen Beach, the same dish will cost from 150 baht, and tom yum – from 200 baht.

A great way to save money is to stop by 7-Eleven. There are three such stores on the island in Na Baan village and another one right by the pier and Tawaen Beach. They sell ready-made sandwiches, rice with chicken, spaghetti, yogurts, fruits, water (a 1.5 L bottle is about 16 baht), ice cream, and snacks. A filling snack on the go will cost 50–100 baht per person. This is especially convenient if you've come for one day and don't want to spend time sitting in cafes.

Lifehack for a day trip: buy food and drinks at 7-Eleven already at the pier in Pattaya or right upon arrival on Koh Larn and have a picnic right on the beach. A sun lounger costs 100 baht, but you can just spread a towel on the sand – entry to the beaches is free, and no one will force you to pay for a spot.

But if you stay overnight on the island, be sure to visit the Na Wat Market night market in Na Baan village. It's a very atmospheric and inexpensive place: sticky rice – just 10 baht, crocodile skewers – 30 baht, fried insects – 40 baht, a portion of fresh fish with salad – about 200 baht. The market comes alive after 18:00, when the last ferry to Pattaya has already left, so for a day visit it is, unfortunately, unavailable.

Also, the island is full of seafood restaurants – they are in almost every cafe, and most often the catch is really fresh, caught the same day. But if your budget is limited, it's better to choose simple family cafes in the village rather than establishments on the first line by the water.

We've only briefly described budget places on Koh Larn. We recommend reading our detailed and honest guide in the article Koh Larn Island in Pattaya: a complete guide for independent travelers – there you'll find a map of the island, ferry schedules, accommodation prices, and a detailed description of all beaches with photos.
