Is it true that local SIM cards are no longer sold to tourists in Thailand?

No, that's not true. Although from time to time in chats and reviews, tourists say that they were refused to sell a local prepaid SIM card in stores like 7-Eleven, and therefore they conclude that they are no longer sold. But in fact, this is not the case, and inexpensive local SIM cards can still be bought. And we see this from our own experience every time during our next trip. The last time we bought a SIM card with a validity of thirty days and a data volume of thirty gigabytes for 199 baht at a 7-11 store in June 2026. Several years ago, there were exactly the same discussions, and we just as easily found and bought local prepaid SIM cards. Perhaps in some stores they really refuse to sell such SIM cards so as not to bother with registration and activation, or they are simply not in stock, but you can always go to another store and ask there. Well, for more details on how and where to buy a local SIM card in Thailand and which tariff to choose, we have told everything in our detailed instructions here - https://nashaplaneta.net/asia/thai/sviaz-internet-thailand-pokupka-prepaid-sim-karty
