Taxis in Bangkok are a very common and relatively inexpensive mode of transport. You can travel almost the entire city center from 100 baht (about 219 rubles at the 2026 exchange rate). However, to avoid overpaying and being cheated, it is important to know a few rules.
The best option is to travel by meter (Taxi Meter). Before getting in, be sure to ask the driver: "Taxi Meter?". If he says the meter is broken, just look for another taxi. The exception may be trips to the airport or long distances (for example, to Pattaya), where it is more profitable to agree on a fixed price.
It is better to hail a taxi on the road, not near tourist spots (shopping malls, attractions, nightclubs). There, taxi drivers often inflate prices because they pay for parking. If you want to save money, just walk away from such places.
The most convenient and profitable option is to order a taxi through apps. In Bangkok, Grab, Taxi-Maxim and InDrive work. Uber does not work in Bangkok! In these apps, you immediately see the final cost of the trip. Grab has the most cars and the fastest pickup, but prices may be higher. If you are not in a hurry, you can save money through Maxim or InDriver. The apps also have a motorbike taxi option β it is twice as cheap as a car, but only suitable for one passenger.
You can pay for the trip through the app in cash at the end of the trip or with a linked card (Russian cards are not linked). You need internet to order, so it is better to get a local SIM card. Read more about how to choose a SIM card in Thailand in our guide.
There are toll roads in Bangkok. If you choose a toll road, you will get there faster, but you will have to pay separately for the toll. Discuss this issue with the driver in advance. Many drivers do not speak English, so it is better to show the route on a map on your phone in advance.
Tip: Tipping in taxis is not mandatory, but you can round up the amount and leave the change to the driver.
