Can I bring a power bank, camera batteries, or regular AA batteries in checked luggage?

Short and most important answer: NO, none of these can be placed in checked baggage. This rule applies to all lithium batteries and cells. Power banks, spare batteries for cameras, drones, vapes, as well as individual 18650 cells — all of these must be carried only in carry-on luggage. The reason is the high risk of fire. If a fire starts in the cargo hold, the crew cannot extinguish it quickly, which could lead to a disaster.
As for regular AA and AAA batteries (carbon-zinc and alkaline), formally the rules do not prohibit their transport in checked baggage. However, in practice, airport staff almost always ask passengers to remove any batteries from their suitcase. Why? Because externally, an alkaline battery cannot be distinguished from a lithium one, and security is being cautious. If something resembling a battery is seen in your suitcase on X-ray, the bag will be opened without your presence (you will already be in the departure area). The prohibited item will be confiscated, and the suitcase may not even be loaded onto the plane.
The safest rule: take all batteries — from power banks to AA cells — in your carry-on luggage. Pack them so that contacts do not short-circuit (in separate zip-lock bags or taped over). This way you will avoid problems both at security and with possible baggage opening.
