What is the road to Lake Ritsa like — asphalt or dirt, and what car can you use?

The road to Lake Ritsa all the way to the lake is good smooth asphalt. The dirt road starts only higher up, beyond the lake, if you decide to go to Malaya Ritsa, Lake Mzy, or Auadkhara. Therefore, you can reach the main attraction of Abkhazia in any car, even a regular sedan with low ground clearance. The main difficulty is not the surface, but the sharp turns of the serpentine, so be careful while driving.
Here's what you need to know about the road and transport:
- Surface: From Gagra all the way to the parking lot by the lake — asphalt everywhere. The road is in excellent condition, no potholes or broken sections. The only nuance is the mountain serpentine with steep turns, but for an experienced driver it is not difficult.
- What car is suitable: Absolutely any car will do — from a subcompact to a minivan. We ourselves drove a regular front-wheel drive sedan, and had no problems. If you have a high SUV, it is even excessive for the road to the lake.
- Where to go further if you have an SUV: If you have an all-wheel drive vehicle with high ground clearance, you can continue on the dirt road to Lake Malaya Ritsa or to Lake Mzy. It is better not to go there in a regular car — the road is broken, with large stones and ruts.
- Parking: Parking is prohibited right by the lake; there are signs and traffic police on duty. You need to drive about 600 meters further along the road; there is a large paid parking lot (see on the map). The cost is 200 rubles for the whole day.
If you don't want to drive on the serpentine, you can take a taxi (from 2800 rubles one way from Gagra) or buy a tour. Group tours cost from 1300 rubles per person, but we recommend individual ones — so you won't be tied to the group and can stop at any place you like.
