There are two airports in Bangkok: Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK). They serve different types of flights, so it's important to know which one you need to avoid confusion and missing your flight.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (code BKK) is Thailand's main international hub. Almost all international flights arrive here, including direct flights from Russia, as well as many domestic flights of full-service carriers. If you are flying from Moscow, St. Petersburg, or another Russian city, you will most likely arrive here. The airport is huge, modern, with excellent transport links to the city center and other resorts.

Don Mueang Airport (code DMK) is the old airport, now mainly used for flights by low-cost carriers such as AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air. If you plan to fly from Bangkok to Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, or other Asian cities on cheap tickets, your flight will most likely be from Don Mueang.

Important! The distance between the airports is about 45 km, and a taxi ride can take from 40 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. If you have a layover between flights at different airports, allow at least 4-5 hours for the transfer. A free shuttle bus runs between the airports (you need a boarding pass for the next flight), as well as city buses No. 554 and No. 555.

Here is a quick cheat sheet to avoid confusion:

  • Arriving from abroad (including Russia)? Go to Suvarnabhumi (BKK).
  • Flying with a low-cost carrier within Thailand or to neighboring countries? Check your ticket β€” most likely it's Don Mueang (DMK).
  • Have a long layover? Check the arrival and departure airports. If they are different, plan your transfer in advance.

We have detailed information about the layout, transport, and all the nuances of the main airport in our guide. We recommend reading the article Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK): online board, how to get there, map, and everything you need to know β€” there you will find answers to all questions, including information on how to get to Don Mueang if you need to transfer to a low-cost carrier.
