Unfortunately, a trip to the pyramids, especially as part of a budget group tour, can be marred by persistent attempts to extort money from you. We have compiled a list of the most common "scams" so you can be prepared:

  • Buying from a hotel guide. This is the very first and most expensive option. Guides often inflate the price by 2 times, intimidating tourists that they will be cheated on the street.
  • "Museums" of papyrus and oils. These are not museums, but shops where you are brought as a mandatory stop. Sellers will very professionally and persistently pressure you to buy something. If you don't want to spend money, firmly say "no" right away.
  • Camel ride to the panorama. The guide will convince you that you cannot walk to the viewpoint and will sell you a "ticket" for a camel ride for $10. This is not true. It's only a 5-minute walk on the sand, and you will easily make it.
  • Entering the pyramid. The guide will insistently offer you to go inside for $20, describing incredible impressions. In reality, you will walk through a stuffy corridor for 5 minutes and see an empty room.
  • Souvenirs "for a dollar". Vendors at every step offer goods for $1. As soon as you show interest, the price "miraculously" increases several times.

Be vigilant and do not give in to provocations. We have gathered all the secrets and honest tips in our article: Trip to Cairo and the Pyramids from Sharm el-Sheikh.
