For a first visit to the Pyramids of Giza and Cairo, we definitely recommend going with a ready-made tour. A self-guided trip only makes sense if you plan to stay in Cairo for several days with an overnight stay to explore the city in detail. Otherwise, you will face logistical difficulties and lose a lot of time.

Main advantages of the tour:

  • Transfer and logistics: You will be picked up from your hotel in Hurghada and brought back. No need to think about how to get to the Giza plateau and back.
  • Interesting guide: Professional guides (sometimes even archaeologists) tell fascinating stories about the construction of the pyramids, the life of the pharaohs, and modern Egypt. You won't get such information on your own.
  • Organization: All entrance tickets and meals are already included in the price, you don't have to stand in lines.

However, be prepared that a group tour has a very tight schedule. Only about two hours are given for the pyramids themselves, and part of the time is spent visiting papyrus and cosmetics 'museums'. If you want more freedom, choose an individual tour.

We recommend reading our honest review of the trip to know all the pitfalls: Cairo and Pyramids from Hurghada.
