The distance from Moscow to the border with Abkhazia (Psou checkpoint) is approximately 1660 kilometers. Travel time heavily depends on traffic congestion, especially on the last section through Krasnodar Krai. On average, without long traffic jams, the journey takes about 20-24 hours of pure driving time.

Here's what to consider when planning:

  • Main highway — the toll M-4 "Don". It is of good quality, but driving on it costs money (at least about 4250 rubles from Moscow, cheaper with a T-Pass transponder on weekdays).
  • Most difficult section — the last 300 km from Krasnodar through Dzhubga, Tuapse to Sochi. This road has serpentines and during the season (July-August) you can get stuck in traffic jams for 10 or more hours. We once spent 16 hours on this section!
  • Life hack: plan to drive this section early in the morning or at night. If the navigator suggests bypassing the traffic jam through the Shaumyan Pass — agree, it will save hours.
