Inside the Sultan Abdul Samad Building there are no luxurious palace halls or a museum. Most of the premises are administrative (they house government offices) and are closed to visitors. However, it is still worth going inside for several reasons.
After the 2026 renovation, some public areas remain open to the public:
- Stairs and corridors on the second floor. The interior here is quite modest but atmospheric, with high ceilings and arches.
- Balconies on the second floor. This is the main reason to go inside! The balconies offer stunning views of Independence Square (Merdeka Square) and, on the other side, the new super-skyscraper Merdeka 118 β the second tallest building in the world. This is a great location for photos.
- Inner courtyard. A cozy, quiet place with a view of the building's facade, from where you can go directly to the Klang River embankment.
- Small galleries and cafes that opened after the recent renovation.
- Toilet on the second floor, which can be useful during a long walk.
Thus, it is definitely worth going inside, especially to go up to the balcony and take unique shots with a view of the old square and the new skyscraper β such a combination of history and modernity is very symbolic for Kuala Lumpur. Especially since entry is free.
