Visiting Batu Caves is an immersion into Hindu culture, so it is important to follow certain rules and be prepared for local peculiarities. Here are the main tips:
- Dress code: You can only enter the main temple cave with your knees and shoulders covered. If your clothing does not comply, sarongs are sold on site for 15 ringgit. Free wraps often run out.
- Footwear: When entering the temples inside the caves, you must remove your shoes. There are no storage lockers; shoes are left on the ground or on special racks.
- Monkeys: There are many here, and they aggressively look for food. Do not bring any food in open bags. Hide water and valuables in a zippered backpack. It is better to drink away from them.
- Water and sun protection: Be sure to bring a bottle of water and a hat or umbrella. Climbing the stairs in the heat can be tiring.
- Beware of touts: At the KTM station, they may try to lead you to the paid Ramayana Cave. The main cave is free, and it is reached by the large staircase with the statue of Murugan.
- Time for photos: To avoid crowds, arrive at opening time (6:00 AM) or after 4:00 PM.
- Donations: If you are offered to participate in a ceremony (tying a string, applying tilak), be prepared to leave a donation (10-50 ringgit). You can politely decline.
- Facilities: Toilets are available downstairs (paid, 2 ringgit), as well as cafes and drink stalls. At the top in the cave, there is only a small shop.
