In 2026, paying for public transport in Kuala Lumpur has become more difficult for tourists, especially from Russia. Almost the entire system has switched to cashless payments, and UnionPay cards are not accepted anywhere except the airport express ERL.

Here is how to pay for transport by type:

  • Metro (MRT, LRT, monorail): you can buy a single ticket at ticket machines at stations. They accept cash (banknotes and coins) and Visa/Mastercard cards (except UnionPay). However, machines may not work with some banknotes, so it is better to have small change.
  • City buses (Rapid KL, Go KL): do not accept cash or cards. The only way to pay is the Touch 'n Go transport card.
  • Suburban trains KTM Komuter: there are no ticket counters. You can only pay with a Touch 'n Go card or through self-service terminals that do not accept cash.

The main solution for a tourist is the Touch 'n Go card. It is a universal contactless card for all transport (except taxis and airport express). You can buy it for 10 ringgit (non-refundable deposit) at most metro stations, kiosks, and gas stations. You can top up the balance with cash at terminals or counters at stations, as well as in stores like 7-Eleven.

Without a Touch 'n Go card, you will greatly limit your options, especially for bus trips. The card works for one person only, and you cannot get a refund of the remaining balance, so top up small amounts.
