It's worth staying in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown if you're looking for a budget-friendly, colorful, and lively area with a genuine Asian atmosphere. However, you need to be prepared for its characteristics.

Pros of Chinatown:

  • Lowest prices for accommodation (dorm bed from 30 MYR, room from 70 MYR).
  • Incredible atmosphere and city pulse: street markets (Petaling Street), temples, cheap food, nightlife.
  • Excellent transport accessibility: near Pasar Seni and Masjid Jamek metro stations, Puduraya bus station.

Cons and realities of Chinatown:

  • Dirt and untidiness: it's one of the dirtiest areas in the center, you can encounter trash, sleeping homeless people, and even rats on the streets.
  • Noise and bustle until late at night.
  • Suspicious characters in the evenings, including workers of the oldest profession.

Is it safe? Our personal experience shows that Chinatown is not dangerous. We walked there calmly even at night. However, a feeling of 'uneasiness' and the need to be more attentive to your belongings is present. It's not a sterile tourist boulevard, but a lively, somewhat shabby working-class neighborhood.

Something interesting is always happening in Chinatown

Conclusion: Chinatown is an excellent choice for unpretentious travelers, backpackers, and those who want to save money and immerse themselves in the real life of the city. If you value cleanliness, quiet, and comfort, it's better to consider Bukit Bintang, KLCC, or Little India.
