Answer (changed )

The most budget-friendly area to live in the center of Kuala Lumpur is Chinatown. This is where the lowest housing prices are concentrated.

  • A hostel bunk bed can be found from 30 Malaysian ringgit (MYR).
  • A private room in a guesthouse with air conditioning starts from 70 MYR per night.

Chinatown is a colorful, noisy, and lively place with street markets, cheap food, and nightlife. However, be prepared for the flip side of the color: the area is considered one of the dirtiest in the city, the streets can be untidy, and dubious characters may appear in the evenings. Nevertheless, it is not considered dangerous, and many tourists (including us) stay here to feel the true pulse of the city.

Petaling Street - the heart of Chinatown

For those who want to save money but prefer more cleanliness and tranquility, a good alternative is the Brickfields or Little India area near Masjid India. Prices there are also low, but the atmosphere is more orderly.
