You can get from Pattaya to Chiang Rai on your own in several ways: by bus (the cheapest), by plane via Bangkok (the fastest), or by a combined route. There is no direct connection between these cities.

1. By bus (the most economical, but long). There is a direct passing bus Rayong-Chiang Rai that goes through Pattaya. You can also go to Bangkok (buses run every 30 minutes from Pattaya North Bus Station) and then transfer to a direct night bus to Chiang Rai from Mo Chit station. Total travel time is from 14 hours. Ticket prices: from Pattaya to Bangkok — about 150 baht, from Bangkok to Chiang Rai — from 600 baht.

2. By plane (the fastest). First, you need to get to one of Bangkok's airports. Direct buses run from Pattaya to Suvarnabhumi Airport. Then — a flight to Chiang Rai. Total travel time (including travel to the airport and waiting for the flight) is 5-7 hours. Flight cost — from 1600 baht.

3. Combined route (train + bus). You can take a minivan or taxi to the railway station in Chonburi or to Bangkok itself, take a night train to Chiang Mai, and from there a bus to Chiang Rai. This is the most scenic, but also the most difficult to organize option.

Recommendation: For most independent travelers, the bus option via Bangkok is optimal. It does not require complex transfers and allows you to save money. If time is more valuable than money, choose a flight.
