No, there are no commissions for transactions when paying with a UnionPay card from Russian banks RSKB and ATB at terminals, as there are when withdrawing at an ATM. For example, if you withdraw from a ruble UnionPay RSKB card at an ATM, a 1% commission is charged, with a minimum of 199 rubles. Additionally, the ATM commission will be deducted (only rare ATMs in some countries do not charge commissions on foreign cards). Nothing like this is deducted for card payment transactions.

However, there are "hidden" commissions that are worth knowing about:

  1. Currency conversions. For each payment transaction, the card bank and payment system receive commissions during conversion. This also depends on the card's currency. For example, if you pay with a ruble UnionPay in Thailand, there will be two conversions: from baht to yuan, from yuan to rubles. These commissions are built into the exchange rates, and their amounts are not explicitly disclosed by banks and payment systems.
  2. Seller commissions. Some sellers add their own commission to the cost when paying. For example, in Thailand and Vietnam, if you pay not with cash but with a card, the purchase price will be 3-5% higher. Usually, sellers mention this before payment, but sometimes they "forget."

We hope it's a bit clearer now, and to decide which UnionPay card is better to choose, read our guide with calculations for payments and cash withdrawals based on personal experience: Choosing the right UnionPay card: rubles, yuan, dollars, or euros.
