What are the pitfalls and dangers of VoWiFi in roaming?

Using VoWiFi abroad comes with several risks that can lead to unexpected expenses. By knowing about them, you can avoid them:
- ⚠️ Sudden switch to cellular network. This is the main danger. If the Wi-Fi connection is interrupted during a call (you move away from the router, the network "goes down"), the phone will automatically switch to the local cellular network, and the call will proceed according to expensive roaming rates. We ourselves almost fell for this in Turkey, "talking away" a couple thousand rubles.
- ⚠️ Calls to local numbers. If you, for example, are in Thailand and call a local restaurant via VoWiFi, your operator will consider this call as international (from Russia to Thailand) and deduct money according to your international calling tariff, which may also not be the cheapest.
- ⚠️ Issues with settings or equipment. On some phones, VoLTE must be enabled first for VoWiFi to work. Additionally, not all public Wi-Fi networks allow such traffic. If the feature is not activated by the operator or on the device, all your calls will go through roaming, even if you think otherwise.
- ⚠️ Old SIM card. With some operators (like Megafon in our case), VoWiFi does not work with old SIM cards. You will have to replace it, and this is a risk: many banks now block transactions or require a personal visit to the office when changing SIM cards, even if the number remains the same. It's better to resolve this issue at home, before departure.
Tip from experienced travelers: During an important or long call via VoWiFi, try not to move far from the Wi-Fi source. And before the trip, be sure to make a test call by turning on airplane mode and Wi-Fi to ensure the technology works correctly.
