How to set up VoWiFi on your phone before traveling abroad?

Setting up VoWiFi is not a complicated process, but it requires attention to details. Here is a step-by-step guide based on personal experience:
- Preparation: Make sure your smartphone supports VoWiFi (usually phones from the last 3–4 years support it). Check if your SIM card is up-to-date. If it is more than 3–4 years old, you may need to replace it at the operator's store, but note that this might cause issues with linking to banking services.
- Activation with the operator: Some operators (e.g., Megafon) require you to write to support via chat in the app to activate the VoWiFi function on their end. Do this in advance.
- Phone settings:
- Go to Settings → Cellular (Mobile networks) → Wi-Fi Calling and activate the switch.
- If there is no such option, try first enabling VoLTE in the same mobile network settings. On some devices (e.g., Samsung), VoWiFi does not work without VoLTE enabled.
- In the submenu, sometimes you need to select network priority — set it to "Wi-Fi priority".
- Testing: Connect to any Wi-Fi network. For testing, enable "Airplane mode", then turn Wi-Fi back on (cellular networks will be disabled). Try making a call. If the call goes through — everything is set up. In normal mode (without airplane mode), the VoWiFi icon should be lit on the screen.
Pitfall: In some public Wi-Fi networks (at airports, hotels), the equipment may be configured to block VoWiFi technology. In such cases, you can try connecting to another network or use internet sharing (hotspot) from another phone that has a local SIM card installed.
We recommend making a test call via airplane mode before the trip to be confident that the function works. More details and nuances of setup can be found in our detailed article: VoWiFi for travelers: how to call from abroad and save money.
