In Thailand, there are two main types of intercity buses: tourist and scheduled. Each has its own features, pros and cons, which are important for travelers to know.

Tourist buses

These are buses of private companies that run between popular resorts (e.g., Pattaya, Phuket, Krabi, islands). Tickets are sold at travel agencies and often include transfer from the hotel to the departure point. They are convenient because they depart from tourist areas, not from remote bus stations. However, they have serious drawbacks:

  • Unpunctuality: departure and arrival times often do not match the stated ones. Buses can be significantly delayed or, conversely, arrive early.
  • Many transfers: especially on routes with ferry crossings (e.g., to Koh Chang island), you may be transferred from a minivan to a bus, then to a ferry, and again to transport on the island.
  • Luggage issues: in minivans (microbuses), there is often no proper luggage compartment, and large suitcases are placed in the aisles, causing inconvenience.

Scheduled buses

These are classic intercity buses that run on schedule between cities in the country. They are cheaper than tourist buses and generally more punctual. They depart from bus stations. There are several comfort classes:

  • VIP class: the most comfortable and fastest, with air conditioning, toilet on board, minimal stops.
  • First class (1st class): slightly cheaper than VIP, also with air conditioning and toilet, but makes more stops.
  • Second class (2nd class): the most budget-friendly. May be without air conditioning or with it, but without a toilet on board. Many stops, travel slower.

Disadvantages of scheduled buses: difficult to buy tickets online (websites are often in Thai and do not accept foreign cards) and there is no single resource with a full schedule of all routes.

The choice depends on your priorities: if you need simplicity and are picked up from the hotel, but are prepared for delays β€” choose tourist buses. If reliability, punctuality, and low price are important, and you don't mind getting to the bus station β€” your choice is scheduled buses, especially VIP or first class.
