Tipping in Malaysia is not mandatory and is not a common practice. In most establishments, it is not expected or required. Often, the bill already includes government tax (SST) and service charge, if indicated on the menu.

However, if you want to thank for particularly good service, it will be positively received. Here are guidelines if you decide to leave a tip:

  • In a restaurant/cafe: You can leave the change from a bill (1-2 ringgit) or round up the amount.
  • To a hotel porter or maid: 2-5 ringgit.
  • To a taxi driver: Round up the trip fare (for example, from 18.5 to 20 ringgit).

Interesting point: Sometimes waiters or taxi drivers may insist on returning the full change to you, even if you left small change. In such a case, do not insistβ€”just take your money back.

The main rule is that tipping should be a voluntary gesture of gratitude, not an obligation. You can read more about local money and traditions in our guide: Malaysian currency (ringgit) in 2026: exchange rate, exchange, bank cards, what to bring and where to exchange.
