Noina (also known as eshta, sugar apple, or custard apple) is a large exotic fruit that can be found in Egypt. It looks like a green bumpy cone the size of a large apple or potato, weighing up to 0.5 kg.

Eshta or Noina

How to eat it:

  1. Wait for full ripeness. Noina is eaten only when fully ripe. An unripe fruit is hard, tasteless, and resembles a pumpkin. After purchase, let it sit at room temperature for 1-2 days until it becomes soft to the touch (the skin may darken slightly).
  2. Break or cut it. A ripe fruit easily breaks apart by hand or can be cut with a knife.
  3. Eat the pulp with a spoon. Inside, you will find fragrant, sweet, creamy white pulp divided into segments with dark inedible seeds. Simply scoop out the pulp with a spoon, spitting out the seeds. The taste resembles a delicate sweet custard with notes of vanilla and pineapple.

Noina season in Egypt: This fruit appears on the shelves in October and November. This is the time to look for it to try a truly tasty and inexpensive fruit.

If you love trying new things, noina is a must-have item on your gastronomic list in Egypt. Read more about exotic fruits and tips for choosing them in our article Fruits in Egypt.
