In Hurghada, as in other resort cities in Egypt, fruits can be bought in three main places: in supermarkets, at markets, and at street stalls. To buy cheaply and not be deceived, you need to know a few tricks.

Fruit stall at the market

1. Markets (bazaars): The most famous is the market in the old town El Dahar. Here you can bargain and possibly buy cheaper, but be careful:

  • Prices are often not indicated, and tourists may be quoted inflated costs.
  • Sellers themselves actively put fruits in bags and may slip in substandard items.
  • Pay close attention to the scales to avoid deception.

2. Supermarkets: For example, chains like Metro, Carrefour, Alfa Market. Here are the advantages:

  • All prices are clearly marked, you can choose each fruit yourself.
  • There is weight control.
  • This is an excellent price reference. Go to a supermarket first, find out the prices, then go to the market—this way you'll understand if it's worth bargaining there.

3. Street stalls: Convenient if they are near the hotel, but prices there are often the highest, aimed at tired tourists.

Important: Always pay with Egyptian pounds (EGP). Even if the market accepts dollars or euros, change will be given in pounds at an unfavorable exchange rate for you. Supermarkets do not accept foreign currency at all.
