For most tourists in Sri Lanka, land leeches are not dangerous. Their bite is painless, and they are not carriers of diseases like malaria or dengue fever. The main discomfort is minor bleeding after the bite and possible itching from dirt entering the wound.

Where exactly in Sri Lanka can you encounter them? In humid mountain forests in the Nuwara Eliya, Ella areas, regions around Sigiriya, national parks like Sinharaja (rainforest) or Horton Plains. There are no leeches at beach resorts like Unawatuna, Mirissa, or Bentota.

The risk of encountering them exists for those who go hiking on tea plantations, trekking in jungles, or excursions to mountain reserves. However, if your route is limited to the cultural triangle (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kandy) and traveling by car on main roads, the probability is close to zero.

We recommend reading our detailed guide, where we share personal experiences with leeches in Sri Lanka and provide specific recommendations: Land leeches in the tropics. There, you will also find links to other useful articles on travel safety.
