The most popular and must-try dishes in Sri Lanka are Rice and Curry, Kottu, Biryani, various flatbreads (Roti, Parotta, Dosa), and Hoppers. Sri Lankan cuisine is a true explosion of character with a very spicy and aromatic taste, reminiscent of Southeast Asian cuisines but with its own unique flair.

The foundation of everything is Rice and Curry (Rice and Curry). This is a large plate of rice, served separately with several small bowls of various sauces, seasonings, vegetables, meat, or fish. Curry is a blend of spices (black pepper, chili, mustard, ginger, turmeric, garlic, coriander, cinnamon) that gives dishes a special aroma and spiciness.

You cannot leave the island without trying Kottu (Kottu) — the symbol of Sri Lanka. This is finely chopped roti flatbreads fried on a griddle with vegetables, egg, meat, or cheese.

For a hearty and aromatic lunch or dinner, Biryani (Biryani) is perfect — a mega-pilaf where rice is cooked in layers with meat, fish, or vegetables, generously seasoned with spices, nuts, raisins, and egg.

For breakfast, be sure to try Hoppers (Hoppers) — these are bowl-shaped thin pancakes made from rice flour and coconut milk, crispy at the edges and soft in the center. Egg Hoppers are the same hoppers but with an egg baked in the middle.

For a quick and inexpensive snack at any time of day, flatbreads are ideal: simple unleavened Roti, airy and flaky Parotta, and crispy pancakes Dosa made from fermented rice and lentils.
