You can get to Jaffna from Colombo by train directly from Colombo Fort railway station. Direct services resumed in 2019 and pass through Anuradhapura and Vavuniya. The journey takes from 7 to 8 hours, depending on the chosen train. This is one of the most comfortable and scenic ways to reach the northern part of Sri Lanka.

Trains depart several times a day, including a night service. Here is the current schedule:

  • Morning 1st class train: departure at 05:39, arrival at 11:49. Ticket price — from 1500 rupees.
  • Daytime 2nd and 3rd class train: departure at 06:40, arrival at 13:58. Price — from 580 rupees.
  • Night 2nd and 3rd class train: departure at 20:00, arrival at 03:47. Price — from 580 rupees.

It is recommended to buy 1st class tickets in advance, as they sell out quickly. For 2nd and 3rd class, tickets can be purchased just before departure, but be prepared for the train to be crowded, especially up to Anuradhapura. To buy tickets online, use the official Sri Lanka Railways website, but note that Russian cards may not be accepted.

The train arrives at Jaffna Central Station, from where it is easy to reach hotels on foot or by tuk-tuk. The station is equipped with ticket counters, toilets, an ATM, and even Wi-Fi.
