Yes, you can, but there are some specifics regarding transporting alcohol during a layover via China, particularly Guangzhou:
- If you purchased alcohol at a duty-free shop in the departure airport and are flying with one short layover via Guangzhou for up to 24 hours on a single airline with a unified ticket, then duty-free alcohol can be carried in hand luggage without issues, if it is packed in a special sealed bag provided by the sellers at purchase. In this case, during the layover at Guangzhou airport, you will go through standard aviation security screening, and alcohol sealed in special bags is allowed through without problems, personally verified. But if you conceal the bag, the alcohol will likely be confiscated.
- If you purchased alcohol at a duty-free shop in the departure airport and are flying via Guangzhou with a layover over 24 hours, or with a layover on different airlines, then you will have to undergo the full visa-free transit procedure, passing through passport and customs control. In this case, your alcohol no longer qualifies as duty-free, and it must be packed in checked baggage, not in hand luggage. Additionally, you will effectively be importing it into China and then exporting it, i.e., moving it through customs, where restrictions apply of no more than 1.5 liters of strong alcohol per person, so excess may be confiscated.
