Is it worth buying Thai baht at Sber, is the rate favorable?

In 2024, Sber launched exchange of Thai baht in its branches, but so far only in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Information about exchange branches and current rates is on the bank's website.

To help you decide whether it is worth buying Thai baht in Moscow or St. Petersburg, we performed an exact calculation comparing the profitability of the exchange rate at Sber versus exchange through cash dollars and exchange of rubles in Thailand at current real rates as of December 16, 2024. We take 100,000 rubles as the reference amount for exchange:

• Baht directly at Sber at selling rate of 33.86 rubles per 10 baht

  100,000 / 33.86 * 10 = 29,533 baht.

• Exchange through dollars at Sber's rates and one of the best exchangers Superrich in Thailand

  • 1. Purchase of US dollars for rubles at rate 105.5.
    100,000 / 105.5 = 947.86 US dollars.
  • 2. Purchase of baht for US dollars at current rate at Superrich.
    947.86*33.97 = 32,199 baht.

• Exchange of cash rubles for baht at Superrich (best rate 0.31)

  100,000 * 0.31 = 31,000 baht.

According to the calculation results, it is clear that the purchase rate of Thai baht at Sber is not very favorable yet, and is inferior to exchanging even cash rubles directly in Thailand by 5%, and 8.6% compared to exchange through dollars. Therefore, for large amounts, we do not recommend exchanging rubles for baht at Sber. But if you need a small amount of baht for initial expenses, you can consider this option.
