The Sights Of Hanoi. What to see?

The Sights Of Hanoi

Most attractions of Hanoi is located in walking distance from sword lake, and, if desired, all of them can be explored in one day. But to visit and explore all filled with exhibits, museums, a variety of traditional architectural structures and temples, historical places and beautiful parks, you will need at least a week.

In order not to get lost when searching for attractions, better write down or print out the names of landmarks and addresses on a piece of paper. If you ask the residents of Hanoi, where a particular location, showing his name on the paper (of course not only in Russian), they will gladly help. Free maps in hotels Hanoi is not yet widespread, and often give just printed black-and-white card. Can use (print) our interaktivni map of Hanoi's attractions.

Attractions, visited Hanoi, also often referred mountain town of Sapa (sa PA) and Halong Bay and perfume Pagoda. Although these places are very far away from Hanoi, the city is the main starting point to visit them as independent travelers, and travelers to the composition of the excursions. To purchase tours in the travel agencies in the tourist district of Hanoi.

Here is a list of the main attractions of Hanoi:

The Museums In Hanoi

This very little known and previously unremarkable Museum in 2012 was the busiest and, in the opinion of many tourists, the most interesting among the other attractions of Hanoi. Objective this assessment, you be the judge, we are only stating. In our own opinion, in the conditions of deficiency of time in Hanoi is better to visit some other attractions of the capital, and the Museum to leave in the end.

The Museum is devoted to the role of Vietnamese women in society from ancient times to the present. The Museum was founded in 1987 and was most recently updated, and then has gained immense popularity among tourists.

The exposition of the Museum occupies three floors. All exhibits are neatly organized and divided into three major thematic exhibitions: the Woman in the family, women in history, Women's fashion. According to the statements of the Museum contains over 25,000 items for various purposes, conveying the atmosphere of different periods of history, and the culture and identity of the country. In fact, the exhibition is not so big, and is unlikely to even reach half of the stated.

In the spacious rooms you will see everyday objects, a collection of costumes, decorations, letters and documents. Great attention is paid to the period of revolutions and wars that took place in Vietnam, and the huge contribution of Vietnamese women in the establishment of the modern state and society. Periodically, the Museum hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events, in one way or another related to the theme of the Museum.

Oddly enough, so far this place is little known and little visited by foreign tourists. About the fortress did not have much information on tourist sites and travel publications. Meanwhile, place it can be put on one of the first places among the Hanoi attractions, and be sure to include it in its programme of visits to the capital. The complex is quite extensive and a full inspection is to provide at least 3-4 hours, preferably for half a day. The Park around the sword lake is a tourist centre, a guideline and a starting point for tourists. It even usually referred to simply as "the lake", and all the hanoytsev understand what it is about. The position of all landmarks is usually defined relative to the lake. To the North of the lake (see map of Hanoi) is a tourist area, aka Chinatown and old town, which focused most of the hotels in Hanoi. Evenings around the lake you can walk for hours and watch the lives of residents of Hanoi. For the hanoytsev is a popular destination for a night of rest and doing morning exercises.

In the middle of the lake on a small island is "the temple of the turtles", and near the North shore of the lake lies the Jade island, which is located in "the Jade temple" (Ngoc Son Temple), which can be accessed on the famous red wooden bridge ("the Bridge of morning sunlight"). This is the oldest pagoda in Hanoi. It was built in the sixth century during the reign of the Emperor Us De, and then named Quoc Hai, which means "ground state". It was originally built outside the dam Yen Fu, and later moved to the West Lake. It was called An Quoc, Tran Quoc Chan Tank. Being in full harmony with nature, the architecture of the pagoda gives additional beauty mind surrounding the lake. The present building of the pagoda is the result of recent repair work in 1815, which included a triple gate, the main building of the pagoda, living room, cult hall of ancestor worship and the garden tower.

Despite the popularity and importance of the pagoda, tourists near the pagoda more than 10 minutes will do nothing, though, is to pay tribute and be sure to look at the unusual design with your own eyes.

This temple first sight is not noticeable, and you might not even notice. Meanwhile, the Bach MA temple in Hanoi is one of the oldest in the city. As the story goes, the temple was founded in the spring of 1010 Emperor tai Lee (Ly Thai To) in honor of the white horse that brought him to this place.

During its existence, the temple was repeatedly subjected to floods and other natural disasters, and much dilapidated. Therefore, in the 18th century it was seriously rebuilt, and the old buildings almost nothing left. Inside the temple you will see conditional statue of the Emperor's white horse.

What is good to visit this temple for free, but to get to it from the old quarter (the tourist area) is not necessary, since it is directly in it.

Working hours: daily except Monday from 8:00 to 11:00 and 14:00 to 17:00

How to get there: the temple is located in the Northern part of the tourist area, and you can reach it on foot (the Bach MA Temple on a map of Hanoi). Address: 76 Hang Buam Street. To find the temple in the labyrinth of streets of the tourist area is quite difficult, so make a note of the name and address on a piece of paper.

Perfume pagoda (Perfume Pagoda)

Ароматная Пагода, Ханой (Вьетнам)
Perfume pagoda

60 km South-West from Hanoi is the temple, which was called "perfume pagoda". This is a very sacred place for the Buddhists, and in the period from the first to the third lunar month (usually from March to April) there is the so-called Festival perfume pagoda (Perfume Pagoda Festival). At this time, to the temple of thousands of pilgrims flock Buddhists.

The pagoda was built in the 15th century, and now there is a whole complex of temples. The main pagoda is located in a mountain cave, and to reach it is not so easy. First, it cannot directly be reached by road. First, you need to get to the pier, where to swim several kilometers by boat and then walk a little walk. At the last stage of the route to the pagoda you can climb her stairs on foot, and are accessible by cable car.

The place is very interesting and is one of the most famous and popular religious attractions of Vietnam. Bad, but when visiting pagodas have to spend the whole day.

How to get there: to get to the pagoda and you can own, but it is better to do this by buying a one-day tour in Hanoi cost from $ 15. If you decide to get yourself, you first have to get to the pier by taxi (public transport almost did not go), and on the pier to hire a boat with boatman. Also, how and when you visit with a guided tour, for an independent visit to the pagoda will take almost the whole day.

The temple is one of the four ancient guardians of the city. Existing structures appeared as a result of renovation and restoration work during the NINETEENTH century, which included a triple gate, courtyard, front, center and cult rooms, and tomb. The statue is of bronze, about 4 m in height and weighing 4 tons was cast in 1677 in honor of Saint Guen Thien Tran In. The entrance fee is 10 000 VND.

Only we should not delude ourselves about the beauty of the temple, despite its historical significance, architectural place is very modest, and do here more than 10 minutes is nothing.

This pagoda is the oldest in the city, its age is estimated to be 1400 years. Of course, what you can see now in the pagoda, has almost nothing in common with the original buildings erected here (even the location of the pagoda has changed from the original, and the last time the temple was completely rebuilt in 1842), but nevertheless, this place is one of the most sacred by Buddhists in Hanoi. That is why this pagoda is visited by many dignitaries of the country. Among them, incidentally, was the President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev, as eloquently tell exhibited in the temple photos.

The pagoda is located on a small island called the island of the Golden fish in the lake Ho Tay (West lake). I can safely say that this temple is one of the most beautiful in Hanoi. Especially picturesque pagoda in the evening, at sunset.

Will not recommend to visit the pagoda in anything during your stay in Hanoi, but if time allows, be sure to check here.

This Catholic Church was built in 1887 by the French in neo-Gothic style and stands out from the overall architectural chaos of the streets of downtown Hanoi. From 1975 to 1985 she was inactive, is now fully operational.

This is the most interesting place to visit during Christmas and new year holidays, when the area in front of the Church turns into a carnival. In another time of year is pretty quiet place to just explore and take pictures. Optionally, you can enter and participate in the service.

The tower is one of the rarest specimens of the Hanoi architecture, remaining intact in clashes with the French in the period between 1894 and 1897. She was built in 1812 and consists of three sites and the tower itself. The Eastern door is inscribed ngen hook, which means "to meet the rays of the rising sun". In the West the doors are two words Hoi Quang what it means to "reflect light", and on the South door - words Huong lake Ming, which means "directed toward the sun". All the sunlight enters here through 36 Windows in the shape of a flower and six fan-shaped Windows.

The prison, built by the French in the early 20th century, primarily intended for political revolutionary-minded prisoners, which contained here in appalling conditions. A little later, during the war with the United States, there were American prisoners of war, in particular, pilots. In this prison even kept John McCain, Senator and candidate for President of the United States and is the subject of a separate exposition. In the 90s the prison was finally closed. Today only a small part of the former prison turned into a Museum, showing the French period and the war with the United States.

Overall, this place is very interesting, informative and well worth a visit, but not for all kinds of cameras, dummies prisoners and a real guillotine, "gift" the French, can someone and scare.

For four miles!!! along this road stretches continuously concrete strip (its practical purpose is to serve the dike flood) with a height of about 1 meter, which is all entirely covered with ceramic tiles. If you will be able to go through it all, we see almost the entire history of Vietnam, from the mythical origin of the Vietnamese to episodes of modern history, scenes from the everyday life of ordinary people and even children's drawings, transferred to mosaic.
