To Samui by train can be reached via the railway station to Suratthani (also called Phun Pin Railway Station) (railway station of Surat Thani on the map). From Bangkok daily from the station Hualamhpong there goes 11 trains, fare 150 baht (seats) up to 1,500 (reclining seats in the compartment), with a journey time of 8-12 hours. Besides, at the station or in travel agencies Bangkok you can buy a combined ticket for train, includes transportation (bus+ferry) to Koh Samui. It will cost about 300 baht more expensive. If you fail to buy a combined ticket, on arrival at the train station in Suratthani you will still meet with suggestions to get to Samui by bus+ferry. It makes sense not to agree immediately, but to find out the prices of other sellers, because they often lomyat prices once the threshold of the train. To ensure that you pay the right price, is to go directly to the buses in the Parking lot, and there buy a ticket (but the tickets are not the drivers and touts-conductors). The normal price for the bus+ferry to the landmark (2014) – 280 baht.
Train timetables can be found on http://www.railway.co.th. Tickets can be purchased at the station, better. You can buy a travel Agency on the street with a small markup. Unfortunately, the sale of electronic tickets has been suspended since 2013.
The train tickets all over Thailand from Koh Samui you can buy without any problems in travel agencies, but with additional fees. There is an office in Nathon, where you can buy train tickets without a fee. This is the office of the company Phantip at 11/4 Moo 3, Taveeradpakdee Rd. It is approximately 100 metres from Nathon pier, the landmark - Krungsri Bank.
In General, it makes sense to go with a night train that early in the morning to arrive on the island. The more that the morning train is only one in 8:05 (arrives in Surat Thani at 16:45). If you still use it, on arrival you will be practically running to escape and look for the bus and ferry. Is the train a little late, and you have no chance, except the night ferry to Samui from Surat Thani centre. But in the end you will come again in the morning.
More about trains in Thailand read the information in "Trains of Thailand: travel by train in Thailand".
The Lompraya Catamaran (Loprayah)
This is a great and quick way to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui, if you are already in Bangkok, especially in Khao San road. There is the office of the company, and from there go to flight. But you can also request a Shuttle service from/to hotel or airport, so that the services of the company you can use immediately on arrival in Thailand through Bangkok airport Suvarnabhumi.
The company offers a comprehensive transfer on their high-speed catamarans to the island. Of course, part of the journey is by bus. By bus from Bangkok to Koh Samui can be reached from the southern bus terminal (Southern bus terminal, Sai Tai Mai). Read more about the terminal Sai Tai Mai and where it is here.
Arriving at the station need to find the cash and buy the earliest flight compound or a combined ticket bus+ferry to Samui (the so-called Joint Tickets). If these will not appear, you need to take to Surat Thani (Surat Thani). To purchase tickets in advance is not required, they are always there if not the next, then after one flight. Exception when tickets may not be, is only the holidays: Thai and Chinese new year.
The cost of a ticket to Surat Thani – from 550 baht to Koh Samui by ferry – from 800. In the way of 10/13 hours, respectively. Better to take a night flight, because even if you will take the earliest bus there is a chance not to catch the last ferry in the case of non-composite ticket to Surat Thani, and then you have to spend the night on Samui, either sail slow night ferry. From the bus station to Surat Thani directly to Koh Samui to get not difficult. Here a Shuttle bus to pier+ferry from 250 baht.
Some buses from Bangkok now arrive at the new bus station near the village of Lipa Noi (bus station Koh Samui on the map), and not to the pier DonSak on the mainland, as it was before. Thus, sitting on the bus in Bangkok you without any direct links are on the island because the bus is forwarded to the ferry, Raja ferry. However, there is one disadvantage - the bus station is far from Nathon pier, where you catch taxis on the ring road in Chaweng and Lamai. Now the station is possible to walk to the ring road literally 200 metres away, and there catch a taxi to Lamai, or drive it in the opposite direction to Nathon, where you can transfer to Chaweng etc Tickets for buses from Koh Samui to Bangkok are sold at the box office on the same bus station.

🚌 Arrive to departure
You can work around all these difficulties with the need to get to the bus terminal and find buses, and just buy a ticket at a travel Agency or hotel in Bangkok (especially in Khao San road). Then you'll either drop you at the bus terminal and put in a large corporate bus (this is the preferred option), or the company uses its own transport. The price of the bus of private companies is very attractive, from 1000 baht for the entire route, but we highly recommend to use their services as they are often breaking their own schedules, sometimes "throw" tourists halfway or "lose" them, of the buses lost bags and other troubles. This does not happen with every tourist, but cases are not rare.
On the ferry
If you get here by yourself, not using a plane and a United ticket, the last stage of your journey to the island will include the ferry. Details about ferries to Samui read here. Direct way to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui on the water does not exist.
