National Park Sinharaja (Sinharaja Forest Reserve) is located in the South of Sri Lanka (Sinharaja forest on the map). It is not as popular among tourists as Yala national Park, but no less interesting and certainly more unique. It is one of two included in the list of UNESCO world heritage in Sri Lanka, natural reserves (see UNESCO sights in Sri Lanka). Translated from the Sinhalese Sinharaja means lion King. This place is revered and respected among local residents since ancient times.

The Park area is small compared to other national parks of the country, just 88,64 square kilometers. But this area has preserved a unique biosphere, because it is one of the few remaining on the planet, places where there are still primeval forest. Here there are many rare species of animals and plants, many of which are listed in the red book. Many of the species are found only here. Here you can meet wild elephants (but better you don't meet them, they are dangerous), many species of monkeys, wild boars, leopards, different reptiles and insects.

Excursion to the forest in the most simple form is a trip to one of the entrance to the Park, walk for 2-3 hours through the forest with a guide, and the trip back. Not always during this walk you can see something really interesting, a lot depends on the guides. Very often they are accused of laziness, desire to guide tourists through the tight trails, there could be as lucky. But you can persevere themselves to offer and demand to go on certain trails. If you want be sure to see all the local beauty, you need to come to Sinharaja overnight stay at the camp so early in the morning to start a long route. One of the most interesting routes include the ascent of the highest peak in the national Park.

Tips for visiting:

Best time to visit is dry season from November to March.

In the woods quite a lot of land leeches. They are not similar to ours, small and their bites are not felt. Say they even jump on victims from trees. To protect yourself from them best of all thick clothing. After walking a better view of the whole body, because they can get into the most unexpected places.

And yet, for security reasons, do not seek encounters with wild elephants.

How to get

Лес Синахраджа, Шри-ЛанкаThe road to the Park sometimes looks so

The Sinharaja forest is large enough, and, of course, you will not pass. Usually offered to explore it on one of the trails at one of the eco-centres and eco-lodge, of which there are several. To move on the roads within the forest as a whole is free and the entrance fee to the trails in the eco-centres will be charged. With a strong desire you can wander around the self unexplored places on their own, but be careful. Here is really dangerous, including the snakes!!! We do not recommend of walking alone in the jungle.

If you are planning to visit the forest, hiring a car with guide or buying excursions on routes you don't need to worry: you will be taken to the entrance, take the money for the entrance and guide them along the trail.

If you decide to go into the woods by yourself, you can use one of several entrances, but not all of them can go straight into the forest on the transport. Our experience (of the authors) showed that on a motorcycle you can stop, at least from Neluwa (this is the road to the waterfall Dooli Ella). Drove this route, you can see the waterfall and then continue on the road towards eco-centre Lankagama and Pitadeniya, making stops to explore in the jungle or in eco-centres. The road there is sometimes very bad, so the travel speed will be very low. To get back better the same route.

From the village of Pallegama, you can get right close to the eco-centre Pitadeniya, bypassing the Dooli Ella. Here is several waterfalls (at least five) and good trails. Tour guides are available.

You can also drive close to the woods through the village of Deniyaya (entrance Morning site), where you can leave the transport, and then to go into the woods alone or with a guide. To get the motorcycle in the woods out here, too narrow path.

From the North the entrance is usually carried out through the village of Kudawa.

Near each of the entrances have the opportunity to stay in the camp (something like a camp site) for the night, to early in the morning to start a longer route.

The input chamber

The entrance to the national Park is 644 rupees, kids - 325 (see money Sri Lanka, the exchange rate). Fees are charged at checkpoints in the eco-centers, but if you get into the woods on their own, it is quite possible that you the moment one of the checkpoints and no money for the entrance will not take you. The cost of the trip into the forest with a guided tour from Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa and other resorts of Sri Lanka starts from $ 50 per person.
