Inexpensive from the airport to get on the buses, but have to go with change.
For starters, you need to get to the bus station in Colombo – Colombo Fort. There is a bus No. 187, but the problem is that the buses from the airport don't run (or walk, but very rarely). To sit on it after you exit the airport you have to pass to the left about 100 meters. But not the fact that you'll find 187-Oh, because apparently they don't all start moving away from the airport. Safer first to get to the bus station Avariata (Averiwatta) (bus station Avariata Colombo on the map), and there are already guaranteed to sit on 187. Access to Avariety on a tuk-tuk for 50-100 rupees (bargaining), or walk for 20-30 minutes (nearly 2 kilometers).
Bus 187 runs frequently, is from 50 to 100 rupees depending on the class. It will take you to the bus station Colombo in about 1 hour. Exit to the penultimate stop before the end, or just ask the conductor to drop you off at the "Bass station". But even if you miss the stop, from the end of Colobo Fort Railway station to the bus station to walk 10-15 minutes.
At the bus station Colombo will need to find a bus to Hikkaduwa. It is worth remembering that Hikkaduwa is just a stop on the route of most of the routes to the South, so you should look for the bus to Galle (Galle), Matara (Matara), Tangaly (Tangalla). All these buses go via the beach, we go almost every 15 minutes, cost from 130 to 300 rupees depending on comfort, in a way 2-3 hours.
To understand immediately at the bus station is not very easy, therefore, to find the right bus, it is best to ask the locals or drivers destination, and go where they will show.
In Hikkaduwa is the main bus station in the Northern part of the city (bus station of Hikkaduwa on the map), as well as several bus stops right in the resort area on the Galle Road, where the bus stops on demand.
Another budget option to get from the airport to Hikkaduwa by bus and then by train. The above mentioned bus # 187 will take you to the train station, Colombo Fort Colombo (end station), where you can catch the train. The cost to Hikkaduwa in the lowest class – from 85 rupees. Railway transport is not so frequent as buses, current schedule, look here - https://www.eservices.railway.gov.lk. Trains stop at railway stations in the North (railway station Hikkaduwa on the map). In the South of the resort area there is one railway station Thiranagama (railway station Thiranagama on the map) where it makes a stop three trains a day. If your hotel is located in the South of the resort, it makes sense to consider the arrival at this station.
About trains it is necessary to tell that during rush hour (it's usually almost always in the daytime) train to Hikkaduwa – not the most comfortable mode of transport. Very often they run Packed as the buses to the factories in the Soviet era. Sometimes you just have to hang on to the handrails and stand on one leg. So think twice before you go. In the evening, after about 17 hours, the cars are almost empty.
